Loganair operates Scotland's lifeline island air network, the small-aircraft services that connect remote island communities with the mainland. If you are heading for Orkney, Shetland or the Hebrides, here is how it works. For a first overview, see our Scottish island flights guide; this is the deeper practical version.

The network and its hubs

Loganair flies from mainland hubs at Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Inverness out to the islands. The main island airports include Kirkwall (Orkney), Sumburgh (Shetland), Stornoway (Lewis), Benbecula and Barra.

Barra: the beach-runway airport

A small airstrip on a Hebridean islandA small airstrip on a Hebridean island · Illustration generated with AI Barra is the only airport in the world with scheduled flights that land on a tidal beach, the cockle-shell sands of Traigh Mhor, which are underwater at high tide. Because of that, Barra's timetable follows the tides and effectively changes daily, alternating between morning and afternoon patterns. It is served by the Twin Otter from Glasgow, a 19-seat aircraft that often sells a few seats fewer because of payload limits.

Pack light: strict baggage limits

Small-island services carry tight checked-baggage limits, capped at around 15 kg on routes to and from Barra, Tiree and Campbeltown and on inter-isle hops, with hand baggage typically up to 6 kg. Weight limits are stricter on the smallest aircraft because payload is the trade-off against fuel. Winter weather also disrupts these exposed routes, so build in buffer time if you have an onward connection.
